Hey everyone! Check out these websites for some great Health and Physical Education news!!

NEA Today Extra - March 2005

Battling Childhood Obesity

You've heard the alarm, but it bears repeating: Some 18 million kids are now officially overweight or obese, and the numbers are growing so fast that many are calling it a national crisis. Can educators do anything to reserve the tide? The March NEA Today cover story looks at school-based health programs and nutrition policies that are making a difference. Here are more resources to help you fight the battle of the bulge in your school.

Visit the SmartBODY Fitness Information Center, an NEA Health Information Network Web site devoted to fitness, weight management, and stress reduction. Educators can tap into model fitness programs, lesson plans, and discussion forums.

Calculate your body mass index. Stop guessing whether you or your students are in the danger zone and learn what it really means to be overweight or obese.

Las Brisas P.E. grading policy

There are two grades given in Physical Education: an achievement grade and a citizenship grade. All students start out with "E"'s in both categories. The expectation in P.E. class is that:
1) the student comes prepared to participate in class
2) the student gives 100% effort and tries their best
3) the student treats others with respect
4) the student has fun!

A student's grade will drop if:
1) they do not come prepared for class (not wearing the proper clothing/shoes for participation)
2) they are displaying poor sportsmanship/attitudes to their classmates/teacher
3) they are disruptive and therefore hindering the learning of other students

The life and times of Coach K (Kloosterman)

Actually I won't bore you with all that. What I will tell you is that I have been a teacher in the Deer Valley School District for the past 16 years. I started teaching P.E. in 1990 at Greenbrier Elementary school and have been at Las Brisas since 1995. I also teach classes at Glendale Community College. I teach racketball and hiking classes there.
I received my undergraduate degree in Physical Education from Arizona State University (GO SUNDEVILS!!), and my Masters in Education (Counseling endorsement) from Northern Arizona University.
I am originally from Michigan and have lived in Arizona for over 20 years. I LOVE it out here and if you know me, you know how much I like to be outdoors!
My hobbies include just about anything that has me outside. I love to hike, backpack, travel, play golf and go to the beach.
I have two dogs and one cat. My cat is the boss of all of us. :-)
The end.

Promoting a healthy lifestyle...

ATTENTION PARENTS....
-Kids learn by example, it is a known fact. Why not set the best example of all and promote a healthy lifestyle within your family. That includes proper nutrition, exercise, getting enough sleep, and spending quality time together. There are many ways to spend quality time with your children. One great way is to do some type of physical activity with them 4 or 5 times a week, even if it is only for a half hour or so. Bike riding, exercising together, playing golf, going for walks, playing catch, hiking... the list goes on and on. All of these activities when done WITH the child shows your children how important YOU think it is to take care of your bodies too! When kids see their parents being active like that, they too will start to develop these lifetime habits of healthy living. So what are you waiting for? The weather is perfect! Get on out there and get active with your child! It's a win-win situation.
